Patio Jointing Compound FAQs

Posted on 26 July, 2021

Jointing your paving is a task that’s easy enough to undertake on your own, but as with anything, questions do crop up.  BC profiles have responded by comprising this concise overview of frequently asked questions surrounding jointing compounds, allowing you to carry out the grouting process with confidence.

How do you use patio jointing compound?

Temperatures and weather can lead to cracks and gaps in the grouting which can look messy and unkempt, especially if weeds begin to sprout up. Patio jointing compound, also known as paving grouting, is used to joint the gaps between your patio’s paving slabs.  The patio jointing compound is ready to apply straight from the packaging, meaning no measuring and mixing is required from you to create the grout. To tidy up your patio and re-establish your home pride, take a look at BC Profile’s DIY Patio Landscaping: Tips and Advice guide for how to use patio jointing compounds.

What do you fill patio joints with?

Patio joints are filled with grout, not to be confused with mortar. Grout consists of a balanced mixture of water, cement and sand. These components can be acquired separately and mixed, but patio grout also appears in a convenient, pre-mixed form that is ready to use - this is known as patio jointing compound.

How long does patio jointing compound take to dry?

The time that it takes for the patio jointing compound to dry depends on the conditions in which it was laid.  In dry, summer conditions it could take around 72 hours for the patio jointing compound to completely set, however, if the patio jointing compound was laid in wet or cold conditions, it could take up to 28 full days to harden and be ready for use.
