Waterproofing & Damp Proofing

Both waterproofing and damp proofing are required to keep out moisture and liquid and prevent damp from seeping into buildings. However, you must understand the difference between waterproofing and damp proofing. Damp proofing is used to prevent soil moisture from getting in whilst waterproofing prevents moisture and liquid. Picking the wrong option could potentially cause major problems for the user in the long term, and this could be extremely expensive. Installing damp proofing when you need waterproofing may lead to water ingress and flooding.

What is damp proofing?

Damp proofing is a coating that is applied through spray or by hand to the external walls of a house. Whilst less popular now than it was in the 20th century this is still a good way of protecting your building providing your surface drainage is in a good condition and has been adequately installed. If the external ground levels are lower than the internal walls, then we would suggest using damp proofing to offer further protection to your home or business.

What is waterproofing?

Waterproofing is often a more popular choice than damp proofing, however, it is more costly. Waterproofing involves focusing on the proofing surfaces, drainpipes but also the wall itself. This provides better longevity and security, especially if the property is a home. Furthermore, unlike damp proofing which will retard moisture, waterproofing will prevent water-bearing against foundations. The waterproofing products are also more flexible in their usage and can be applied to concrete blocks and even poured concrete walls.

Do I need waterproofing or damp proofing?

A good way to identify whether you need waterproofing or damp proofing is to assess the external ground levels of the building. For any property where high ground levels are present, you can safely assume that water ingress could occur. Consequently, you need a waterproofing system. Alternatively, if there are no high ground levels you can consider damp proofing as a possibility.

Make sure you properly research the type of home you own and the scale of the potential issue when deciding between the two. If you have any concerns, feel free to contact our helpful staff at BC Profiles and they will be happy to provide some guidance.
