Tips for maintaining your driveway

Posted on 10 May, 2023

If you have a driveway, there’s no doubt that it’s a vital feature of your home. They’re important to your home because they provide a safe place to store a car, reduce insurance premiums, and can also improve the curb appeal.

As well as the above, a driveway can add value to your home if you decide to sell it later down the line, especially if it’s been well maintained.

Keeping your driveway maintained can also just enhance the aesthetics of your home, making it more visually appealing.

But why is driveway maintenance important?

The importance of driveway maintenance

A lot of homeowners will set up a cleaning schedule for their home, but neglect to include the driveway. This is due to us presuming that because they’re made from durable materials such as concrete, they’ll be able to withstand the elements.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the case, driveways still need care and attention just like the rest of your home. If the concrete or asphalt base becomes damaged and moisture penetrates it, it can damage the paving, and can lead to pressure building up in the foundations of your home.

Cracks in the driveway are also a safety concern, your car’s tyres or visitor’s tyres could be damaged, and people may be at risk of tripping on the cracks.

However, if you take care of driveway, the chances of these issues occurring will be reduced, so you’ll simultaneously save money and stress.

Sealing the driveway

One of the best methods of driveway maintenance involves using a block paving seal. You can use a seal to reduce damage, slow down natural wear and tear, and protect the base material.

Sealing your driveway will also:

  • Provide the driveway with a waterproof layer
  • Prevent sand erosion
  • Prevent stains from oil and grease
  • Prolong the finish on your drive
  • Reduce any future maintenance that’s required
  • Extends your driveway’s lifespan.

Anyone can do carry out this maintenance method, if you’ve got the right tools for it, which you can purchase from the BC Profiles website.

Weed removal

An alternative solution to applying a sealant is weed removal. Weeds are not only unsightly, but their roots can damage your driveway. It’s best to get rid of them sooner, rather than later. You can remove weeds with two different methods.

You can manually pull the weeds, which is an effective but tedious way of doing it. But for this method, you just need to pull the weeds out at the root. To minimise your chances of injury, rest your knees on some cardboard.

Alternatively, you can use a weed control product such as our 3 litre Roundup Weedkiller. Weedkillers are systemic, which means that they kill weeds at the root, so they don’t come back.

Most weedkillers such as this one are ready to use straight away, with no real preparation required. If the product has a spray mechanism, it will be childproof in order to make it a safe product for families.
